Copying television and radio

Staff at nearly all Australian schools can copy whatever they want from television and radio, whenever they want. There is no need to obtain permission, nor do you need to pay individual copyright clearance fees, and, in most instances you don't even need to keep a record of what you have taped. Provided your school has a Screenrights licence, it's as simple as pushing the "record" button.

Licensed schools are also able to "communicate" the copies they make. This means they can show copied programs on a school network or email them to students.

Schools covered under the Screenrights licence

All government primary and secondary schools and almost all other schools in Australia already have a Screenrights licence. Contact us if you are unsure if your school is licensed or have any other questions about the licence. For a practical guide to copying and more, see also: FAQs, Using Audio Visual for Education or a summary in the Info Sheet - Educators.

Making the most of television programs for school children

EnhanceTV is an online resource developed by Screenrights to help teachers and librarians get the most out of their Screenrights licence. The site contains online program guides, free study guides and feature articles. By joining EnhanceTV you can choose to receive the popular free email educational TV guide which is divided into learning areas. Membership is free.

If you have missed out on taping a program, EnhanceTV has an online store of copied programs. Alternatively you can request EnhanceTV to record upcoming programs on behalf of your school. All copies are advertisement-free and delivered within 7 working days. The EnhanceTV store is exclusive to Australian educational institutions with a Screenrights licence. Membership is free.
